Papal Church of Santa Maria Maggiore plus other churches

Experience Marche - degustazione tartufo

  • Tour of Villa Bonaparte, the residence of the French Ambassador to the Holy See. French elegance, English charm, and Italian taste – according to the writer Lady Sidney Morgan, this is what the Villa Bonaparte in Rome combines.

  • Not far from the bustling Roma Termini central station and even closer to the Porta Pia, designed by Michelangelo, lies the hidden estate once home to Paolina Bonaparte (1780-1825).

  • Visit the interior of the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Founded in 432 AD (making it the oldest Marian church in Rome), the basilica is believed to house a relic of the crib in which the infant Jesus was laid in Bethlehem, as well as the Salus Populi Romani icon of the Virgin Mary. The basilica contains several rows of remarkable mosaics and the tombs of seven popes. Visit other churches in the area that are less well-known to tourists but are famous for their mosaics from the Byzantine period.

Rome,1 Day Program - For groups
CASTEL SANT'ANGELO PLUS PALAZZO FARNESE

Experience Marche - degustazione tartufo

  • Visit Castel Sant'Angelo (originally the Mausoleum of Hadrian, which was originally built as a mausoleum for the Roman Emperor Hadrian (117–138 AD) and his successors and later converted into a fortress by various popes. The building has not been used as a fortress since 1901. Since February 13, 1906, Castel Sant'Angelo has been a museum.

  • Walk through Piazza Navona and Campo De' Fiori, towards Palazzo Farnese.

Campo De' Fiori literally means "field of flowers," a name that dates back to the Middle Ages, when the area was still a meadow full of flowers. It is a misconception that the rectangular square's name derives from the flower market that is held here regularly. Due to the daily market of flowers, fruit, herbs, and vegetables (Monday to Saturday), the square is very lively and colorful in the mornings. In the evenings, there is a lot of drinking (mainly by tourists) on the terraces and in the bars surrounding the square. The square is located not far from the famous Piazza Navona, one of the most spectacular and characteristic urban complexes of Baroque Rome. The square is bordered by the buildings that rose on the ruins of the Stadium of Domitian, whose tracks have been preserved in their shape and size.

  • Free time to stroll, drink an Italian espresso/prosecco, etc.

  • Visit Palazzo Farnese, one of the city's most beautiful Renaissance buildings. Since 1874, the palace has housed the French Embassy (therefore, tours are only available from the interior staff in English, Italian, or French, with no translation available). Since May 2024 (every Tuesday at 5 p.m. in English or every Thursday at 5 p.m. in Italian or French), the underground passages of Palazzo Farnese can also be visited, which house archaeological finds from three different periods of ancient Rome, including two wonderful black and white mosaics.

Alessandro Farnese, a cardinal at the time and even Pope Paul III from 1534 onward, was responsible for its construction. As an influential man and avid art collector, Farnese sought to commission only the best architects and builders of his time. The consortium of creative minds consisted of Antonio Sangallo, who began construction in 1514; Michelangelo, who would later continue the project; and Giacomo della Porto, who completed the Palazzo Farnese. The Palazzo Farnese is an astonishing Renaissance gem. The façade of this extraordinary building alone gives an idea of how opulent the halls of this architectural masterpiece must have been. Inside the palazzo, you'll find numerous beautiful frescoes and tapestries. One of the absolute highlights is the fresco-decorated Carracci Gallery, which dates back to the late 16th century.
